Using Clean Language to facilitate through conflict and change

March 11, 2025

About a month ago, partway into a first coaching session with a pair of leaders, I asked if they were noticing anything.

"We talk about different things, but we're actually talking about the same thing," one said. "It feels good to remember we’re using different methodologies to put the same ideas into the world."

"And you?" I asked the other.

"We’ve had moments of disagreement, but sometimes it's around the way something is said, as opposed to its intended meaning. When you come from different places or spaces, the language is different, and that can often be an obstacle, but once you find a way to communicate using a common language, it’s much easier to find points of alignment."

This is the power of using Clean Language to facilitate conversation. It helps us get interested in what someone means, instead of what we *think* they mean.

These methods and tools give me confidence to move forward with what emerges, stay grounded and pivot in the moment in service of helping people communicate across divides — whether real or perceived.

And I want to help others do the same.

This is why Erin Randall, Caitlin Walker (PhD) and I have teamed up to host the first-ever Clean in Montana training in Bozeman, April 24-26.

In this small, bespoke training, you’ll gain deeper knowledge and expand your toolkit for helping teams move through conflict and change. And best of all, you’ll gain a community of practice in what can sometimes be lonely work.

This rare opportunity will transform your leadership, communication and facilitation.
